Judge Michele Lowrance
_Michele’s parents divorced before her third birthday, yet she has vivid memories of the conflict that swirled as their relationship ended. One day she listened to them from the next room of a Miami hotel. Neither wanted to be burdened with a child. “I don’t want her,” was followed by, “I don’t want her either.” Michele couldn’t contain her rage. She burst into the room and announced, “I don’t want you either!” Though her grandparents gave her a home, she developed intense sensitivity and protectiveness for the children of divorce and the people going through it. Later, when she underwent her own divorce as an adult, she faced a crisis. She’d seen too much destruction of families and children, and decided the situation must change. The divorce process had irrevocably altered her, but Michele knew she had the power to create a positive outcome. She devoted both her personal and professional life to improving the situation. She served 20 years as a family law attorney, eventually becoming convinced that there is no right side in a divorce. That was followed by 15 years as a divorce court judge in Chicago, Illinois, where she honed her expertise on failed relationships, and more importantly, what productive steps can be taken to create a positive outcome. As she learned, she created a better system. As a mediator, she’s tasked every husband and wife assigned to her court with implementing her ideas before they proceed with their case. Amazingly, since that time, every single divorce case she’s overseen has avoided trial. Michele’s revolutionary system is now described in her book, The Good Karma Divorce.
